What is Salt Therapy?

Salt Therapy, also known as Halotherapy is a drug free, non invasive treatment that alleviates the health problems associated with respiratory and skin related conditions. Salt Therapy involves sitting in a specially prepared room which simulates the microclimate of Eastern European Salt Caves (Speleotherapy). A Dry Sodium Chloride Aerosol solution, with particle sizes between 1 – 5 microns, is dispersed into the room by a special medical device whilst patients relax in comfortable chairs, inhaling the 100% natural, drug free healing properties of Salt.

How does Salt Therapy work?

Using a specially prepared room, combined with a state of the art, patented medical device, the microclimate of the Salt Mines in Europe is reproduced along with all of the naturally occurring therapeutic properties. The medical device grinds pure salt into super fine particles of between 1 – 5 microns. This process imparts a negative charge to the salt particles (negative ions) which are dispersed into the room in the form of a dry saline aerosol. Patients sit in the artificial Salt Cave breathing in the superfine, dry highly dispersed sodium chloride solution which reaches the entire respiratory tract. Once it interacts with the lining of the bronchi and alveoli, it dissolves and attracts allergens and bacteria which are later coughed up or leave the body via the blood stream. The treatment eliminates the root of all inflammatory respiratory illnesses (of all inflections of the lower or upper respiratory tract, asthma, bronchitis and allergy catarrh) by destroying bacteria and restoring health.

How many sessions will I need?

Every experience is different and it depends on the type and severity of your condition. Generally speaking, for people with colds, flu symptoms, ear infections or other temporary respiratory discomforts, 1 to 10 sessions can be very effective. For chronic respiratory and dermatological conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, allergies, psoriasis, etc., it is strongly recommended to complete 10 to 30 sessions of 60 minutes each, in as short a time period as is feasible. Salt room treatment is most effective when it is administered at least twice a week or more frequently. You may feel some improvement after one session, but a series of treatments is best for longer-term results. After a series of treatments your breathing will become easier and symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath will improve noticeably. It is advisable to repeat the therapy 1 to 3 times per year to maintain the positive results. For preventative, recreational, relaxation and stress relieving purposes, sessions can be taken as many times as desired.

What can I expect after a course of Salt Therapy?

Doctors have noted that thousands of patients have been successfully treated by Speleotherapy (treatment in natural salt caves) in Canada, Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Austria and Germany since 1940. After a course of Salt Therapy, symptoms were improved resulting in a significant decreased usage of medications such as steroids and inhalers.

Depending on your condition (if it’s a respiratory based condition), you will notice a reduction in mucus or phlegm production as the mucociliary system improves and associated symptoms of coughing, shortness of breath, inflammation and irritation of the airways all improve. Those suffering skinconditions can expect a reduction in oedema, redness and itching. Patients experience positive results in as soon as 7-30 days.

Are there side effects?

Rarely. There are some sensitive individuals for whom salt therapy may produce a few side effects like slight skin irritation or red patches that disappear after a few sessions. Some patients report a mild throat tickle, which can be easily treated by gargling with hot water. If you have a lot of mucous, it is not uncommon to experience increased coughing after a treatment. This is the body’s way of responding to the salt treatment by eliminating the accumulated mucus.

Is Salt Therapy safe for children?

Salt therapy is not only safe for children, it is highly recommended. It is a 100% drug free, non-invasive and comfortable treatment with no side effects or potential health hazards. Children as young as 3 months have benefitted greatly and respond to the therapy even more quickly than do adults. Children are more prone to respiratory problems because they pick up more viruses and their lungs are not fully developed until about the age of 9. In addition, children also take more breaths per minute than adults do and due to their height at a younger age, are also breathing in air lower to the ground. This means they are breathing in more polluted air, more often and without a fully developed respiratory filtering system.

Is Salt Therapy safe for pregnant women?

Yes. Salt therapy is a great choice for women who do not want to rely heavily on over-the-counter or prescribed medication for sinusitis, asthma, allergies, and other respiratory illnesses. Our Salt Therapy sessions provide relief for their congestion and chronic respiratory problems. In addition, the ionized salt particles will help boost their immune system.

Can I continue to use my medication with Salt Therapy?

Yes. Salt room therapy should be used as a complementary treatment. Patients who undergo Salt Therapy often find that they can reduce their dependence on certain medications and that their episodes are not as frequent or severe. However, you should always follow your doctor’s advice and your prescribed medication regimen.

If too much table salt is not good for your health, why is inhaling salt beneficial?

Over consumption of salt in our diet is linked to high blood pressure which can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Most table salt has been over refined and has anti caking agents (E535 and E536) which are often problem causing. Salt Therapy allows you to breathe in 100% drug free and chemical free dry saline aerosol solution ground from pharmaceutical grade salt. It has no additives or impurities and especially no anti-caking agents. The amount of salt entering your lungs in our salt rooms (1-10mg/m3), is very low when compared to the average adult daily recommended intake of salt consumption of 6g. Therefore, the amount of salt entering your respiratory system is so low there would be no detrimental effects. Salt entering the lungs kills bacteria and reduces inflammation and loosens mucus.

What is the difference between a Salt Pipe and treatment in our Salt rooms?

The dry salt aerosol microclimate inside our Salt Therapy rooms, is continuously monitored and generated by Breeze Tronic Pro technology. The concentration, size of the particles, temperature, humidity and level of negative ionised charging is constantly controlled during the session.

Salt Pipes are recommended for use between Salt Therapy treatments but they cannot provide the same quality aerosol, which plays a key role in the healing of the respiratory system.

Is there a risk of cross infection from other clients in the Salt room?

A stable hypoallergenic, hypo-bacterial environment is maintained in the treatment room. The microclimate our Salt Rooms is 3 times more sterile than a hospital surgery room as measured by the number of microorganisms present in the air, therefore the risk of cross infection is virtually eliminated during the therapy.

According to the WHO standards on air sterility, 1m3 should contain less than 300 microbial bodies. The assessment of the microbial bodies present during a session of Halotherapy identified that 1m3 contains from 90 – 200 saprophytic microorganisms; far below the standard set by the WHO.

If any bacteria managed to enter the room and it somehow survived in the sterile environment maintained by up to 2 tons of salt in the room, at the end of each session the air is completely vented for 15 minutes and replaced with fresh air for the next therapy session. Surfaces such as handrests and the children’s room table are wiped down on a frequent basis.

Why is it so relaxing in our Salt rooms?

As the medical device grinds the pharmaceutical salt, it imparts a negative charge to the salt particles creating negative ions. Negative ions are exceedingly beneficial and are associated with improvements in mood and physical health.

Researchers at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow discovered that negative ions are able to help protect the body from induced physical stress.

British researchers at the Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences found negative ions significantly improved all physiological states, particularly during rest.

What shall I wear during Salt Therapy?

For Salt Therapy you don’t need to wear any special clothing unless you are coming for skin conditions, when we recommend you wear shorts and T shirt, to expose as much of the affected area as possible. No thongs are to be worn in the salt rooms so please bring a clean pair of socks to slip on. We provide hairnets and shoe covers to wear during the therapy. For children, we request that they come to sessions in clothing that is clean and to bring clean socks, as the shoe coverings we provide may be too large to stay on their feet as they play in the salt room. We also request that children with long hair wear it in a ponytail or bun.

The temperature in the rooms is maintained between 18 and 24 degrees.

We request that you do not to wear perfume or scented body lotion before or during the therapy, as many of our clients are allergic to them.
